Overview: Initiated in 2012 by the National Park Service, the HBCUI program connects students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to park units linked to African American history and culture. Interns gain exposure to public land management careers while contributing to the protection of natural, historical, and cultural resources. Since its inception, the program has hosted over 250 interns, representing 60 HBCUs, who have contributed over 100,000 service hours.

Key Information:

  • Location: Various National Parks

  • Modality: In-person

  • Compensation: $640-$720 weekly stipend, with housing and travel expenses provided for out-of-state participants

  • Estimated time commitment: 11–20 weeks

Eligibility Requirements:

  • US citizen or permanent resident (green card holder)

  • Between the ages of 18-30 years (up to 35 for veterans)

  • Ability to pass a federal background check

  • Availability to attend the Career and Leadership Workshop from August 3rd – August 8th, 2025
