Smart Mentoring Program

Overview:
SMART Mentoring engages UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students in mentoring elementary and middle school students from low-income communities. Participants explore issues of race, class, and gender, with the goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of local youth. The program combines mentorship with academic courses and service learning.

Key Information:

  • Location: Chapel Hill, NC

  • Modality: In-person

  • Compensation: Unpaid, for-credit program (3 credit hours in Fall, 1 credit hour in Spring)

  • Time Commitment: Year-long (September to April), including 45 hours of one-on-one mentorship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Open to all UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students, with preference for Buckley Public Service Scholars

  • Strong interest in mentoring, social justice, and youth development

  • Must enroll in SOCI 444 (Fall) and SOCI 393 (Spring)

  • Commitment to complete program requirements including mentor training, orientations, and coursework
