Overview:
SMART Mentoring engages UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students in mentoring elementary and middle school students from low-income communities. Participants explore issues of race, class, and gender, with the goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of local youth. The program combines mentorship with academic courses and service learning.
Key Information:
Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Modality: In-person
Compensation: Unpaid, for-credit program (3 credit hours in Fall, 1 credit hour in Spring)
Time Commitment: Year-long (September to April), including 45 hours of one-on-one mentorship
Eligibility Requirements:
Open to all UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate students, with preference for Buckley Public Service Scholars
Strong interest in mentoring, social justice, and youth development
Must enroll in SOCI 444 (Fall) and SOCI 393 (Spring)
Commitment to complete program requirements including mentor training, orientations, and coursework
