Organization Overview: Home Start is a San Diego-based, private non-profit agency dedicated to child abuse prevention and to providing evidence-based family strengthening services. Home Start provides services to children living in poverty who require immediate, comprehensive solutions to ensure their safety and healthy development.
Key Information: Home Start’s Housing Outreach Programs meet and engage with runaway and homeless youth across San Diego County, connecting them with resources and providing help to meet basic needs such as transportation to shelter, housing referrals, hygiene items, food and blankets. As an intern you will provide mobile supportive services to clients including moving assistance, rental assistance and case management services. Successful candidates MUST feel comfortable working in the field directly with homeless clients.
Location: there are three different locations.
East County Housing Program – 333 East Main Street, El Cajon, 92020
Housing Central Office – 3510 Adams Avenue, San Diego CA 92116.
Home Start Main Office – 5005 Texas Street #203, San Diego, CA 92108
Modality: this is an in-person role, where you are required to travel to clients, agencies, or meetings.
Compensation: Unpaid
Eligibility Requirements:
Current student working on obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in human services or other related field.
Experience: Knowledge of counseling and advocacy techniques for people who have been victims of domestic violence, including crisis intervention and case management skills beneficial.
Other requirements: Must have a valid California driver’s license, a safe driving record, insurance and reliable vehicle and willing to use it on the job. Mileage for work travel will be reimbursed. Must have self-care in place to handle exposure to potentially upsetting client experiences.
